If you were asked about your finances at night, awaken from sleep will you remember the figures? Will you remember your deposits, your debts, your net savings, your average monthly expenses? Not many of us can answer these questions. Money is one of the most important parts of our life, but we do not know much about our own finances in precise terms. Is that not surprising?

Money management plays a very vital role in success. If you were to put the same questions to a very successful person, you will get all the answers with analysis thrown in for good measure. Those who make very big money understand the importance of money management. Unless you manage your money, you will not be able to make best use of it. I would discuss few important parts of money management here.

Debt- do not take debt if you can manage without that. The thought that you have debt makes you feel uncomfortable and kills enthusiasm. Ask two persons about their life- one who has no debt but lives very simply and other who has debts and lives lavishly. You will find out that one without debt is enjoying his/her life more.

Increase Savings - Save more and spend less. Your savings will not only be useful for a rainy day but also create a war chest for you that can be used when the right opportunity arrives.

Increase Profits- target good profits and try to reach that figure in your business. If you are employed, set targets for your salary and achieve it.

Reduce Costs - Wherever possible, reduce costs. Avoid all unnecessary expenditure. Reduce every cost. Live frugally till you save your first million. After that it will become easy to earn more and spend more. If you do that right from the beginning, you will never be able to save your first million.

It's not hard to get yourself in a hole that requires bankruptcy to bail you out these days. All of the expenses in our lives, plus the debts from loans big and small, credit card bills, and other miscellaneous debts add up and create a helpless stress. You feel like the only way out is bankruptcy.

Though it is an option, it should be a last option, behind managing credit card debt, and practicing good money management habits.

There is also debt settlement plans to help you out of your situation as well. This actually is a rather quick solution, helping you get out of your problem in a relatively short period of time. Finding a debt consultant to help you, you'll begin to feel a strong sense of relief when your balances are cut down significantly through the process. However, this does not mean you're in the clear, it's simply a way to help give you wiggle room.

The way this works essentially is that you'll contact a debt settlement consultant with a lot of experience, and they will help you with all of the forms and paperwork involved. He or she will also go over the details of how such a program works. Basically, besides settling with lenders on cutting your payments down, they will also consolidate your debt and help you recover your original financial standing, again within a pretty short period.

You will be evaluated to see if you're qualified for the program or not. Your expected monthly budget will then be calculated to see what needs to be placed aside for meeting the settlement payments.

This can obviously bring a huge amount of relief to your life.

If you can't see in front of your face because of all of the bills that lay ahead, including your car payment, your medical bills, school loans, credit card bills then this is the program that you should enroll in as soon as possible. These loans that you're having problems with are unsecured, and if they're not managed well, you've got a ton of problems ahead of you, as well as your personal assets being at risk.

Money management is a skill that we should be taught very early on, however this country seems to look the other way on this aspect of life, and just throw us out to the lions. You can think of this as a life lesson, however you only want to have to learn it once. It's easy to learn however when you make use of your debt management consultant, and very soon your social and financial status can be pieced back in place.

These plans can help you get out of trouble in as short as five years. How long it takes actually depends on you, and your willingness to work hard at getting yourself out of trouble. It's so easy to resort back to our destructive ways that get us in so much trouble.

Choose your plan wisely and be responsible with your second, and perhaps last chance of having a financial life.

Increasing wealth and net worth is about more then just making good investments or even "getting lucky". The key to lasting wealth comes from good money management. Do you realize just how many people are millionaires? The numbers may surprise you. The person sitting next to you could very well be a millionaire. Your neighbor that lives across the street could also be a millionaire.

The most common misconception that most people have about the wealthy is that they always drive around in fast and fancy cars, take lavish vacations, and live on large estates. While that may be true of some people, but the majority of the wealthy live normal lives and go to normal jobs. The reason? They realize that uncontrolled spending can lead to uncontrollable credit and unfortunately as has been the trend, bankruptcy. There are several points that one could use to compare their wealth plan with their actions to see if they are truly heading in the right financial direction.

Do You Save? Sure everyone tries to save a little here and there, but to truly become a financial success a regular savings plan that is part of a well-balance budget. Saving money isn't always easy. The advice of a financial advisor or even the use of money management software can help you plot a financial route. Planning for emergencies, educations and even mundane expenses should be part of a budget.

Certainly there are people who have stumbled upon their fortunes either by inheriting it hitting it big in the stock markets. That is a very rare occurrence and those who frivolously invest in every scheme imaginable to strike it rich usually just end up the complete opposite. Again proper money management is key.

Planning to save means that you determine now where you want to be and then follow in a patter of saving and investing that makes it possible to meet that goal. Of course a balanced portfolio utilizes more then just a savings plan. Investing in mutual funds and stocks should really carry and equal share of the load. Good money management also means controlled spending. A perfect example is that of an NFL player.

It is hard to believe that people who make enough in a couple of years for most of us to retire on would have any kind of money problems, but year after year players get themselves into financial binds and end up in the red. The reason is poor spending habits. Spending money on anything from a sports car and matching house for mom to an expensive dog house, they forget how important it is to save thinking they will always have enough. That is almost never the case. For these stars they should be saving more then they are spending in a year to be prepared for premature retirement or other emergencies. Only by controlling spending habits and developing solid money management skills can a person, star or not, ensure that they will be financially secure for the future.

Type your summary hereMost traders think forex money management is just placing a stop and it's much more than that. Good money management can turn a losing system into a winner and mediocre system into one that makes triple digit gains.

If you want to win long term at forex trading, you need to defend what you have and keep losses small. As the old saying goes - to win you need to bet and you can't bet if you're not at the table! Obvious but true.

Most traders pay very little attention to money management - but it's the cornerstone of your forex trading strategy's success, so let's look at some tips you can incorporate in your forex trading strategy and become a winner.

Leverage

The first point to keep in mind is don't use all the leverage your broker gives you.

They will in many instances give you up to 400:1 and it's tempting to use it all however, if you do you will blow your account out the water.

A good leverage is maybe 10 - 20:1.

Trading Frequency

Cut your trading frequency back.

Most novice traders simply trade too much and take low odds trades. The good opportunities don't come around often and you need to be patient and wait for them.

I know traders who trade less than 20 times a year and make triple digit annual gains so - trade only when high odds trades present themselves.

Deciding Bet Size

How much should you risk on one trade?

Common wisdom often says 2% but for a small account this risk is so small it means 20 on 1,000 account. Well you won't make much money doing that! Risk 10 - 20% of your account equity on any single trade.

Forex trading is all about taking calculated risks at the right time and making meaningful bets - if you don't like risk don't trade forex.

Diversification

If you have a small account and a good trade and you think can make big profits, don't dilute its potential. Diversification is not guaranteed to reduce risk and in most instances dilutes gains.

Always Assume the Worst

Many traders think their risk reward is their stop minus their profit objective - but that's a trader's opinion nothing more. When entering a trade always assume the worst eventuality and from there, things can only get better!

The Biggest Mistake of Novice Traders!

In money management placing a stop is normally easy, where most traders go wrong is the way they trail it.

Most traders get so excited when they get a profit, they don't want to let it get away and they immediately move their stop up to close and get stopped out on a normal counter trend swing. The market then immediately goes back the way they thought and makes thousands and their not in!

To make the really big profits, you must accept drawdown in the short term in your open equity, to bank the big profits. Look at any forex chart and you will see that the big trends last weeks, months or in some instances years and you need to hold them as long as possible.

A good way to do this is a key moving average and we like the 40 day MA, then look for trend line support or resistance just below it. It's far enough back to keep you in the trend but close enough to protect you.

Forex money management is all about taking calculated risks at the right time.

It's a fact that most traders try so hard to avoid risk, they take too little which guarantees they lose. The above money management tips if used correctly will balance the risk reward just right and lead you to triple digit gains.

There can be and are whole books written on the topic of money management, but I like to keep things simple so I will just give you a few simple rules that you can follow to implement successful money management in your forex trading.

Actually, to make it even simpler, I believe that money management when it comes to the currency markets can really be summed up in a nice way with just one sentence:

......(wait for it)......

Make sure that you always trade the same number of lots on every trade that you make!

Ok, that's it, end of article. Just kidding, but if you were to walk away and remember just that one sentence you would probably end up making your trading more profitable on the whole.

I will let you in on a few some other aspects of good money management, but CONSISTENCY is a very important part that you should never neglect.

First off, forex traders are able to take advantage of large amounts of leverage, which greatly magnifies any profits or losses. Because of this, doubling your trading account balance is just as easy as completely wiping out your account.

The first simple rule of proper forex money management is to always fund your live trading account with RISK CAPITAL. Simply put, risk capital is just money that you do not need to survive or pay the bills.

When you only fund your account with risk capital, you will feel much more emotionally detached from that money and it will be easier for you to adhere to the rules of your trading strategy.

Something else that many novice forex traders fall victim to is over-trading their account. This will usually happen in a rage after a losing series of trades, and it is very reminiscent of a losing gambler trying to double his bets to recoup his losses, but only ends up losing more.

The second simple rule of money management is not to over-trade your account, and only enter the market when you have SUFFICIENT REASON or justification for entering.

Also realize that it is pretty unrealistic to believe that you can have winning trades 100% of the time. Losing trades just happen sometimes, so deal with it! Because even the best forex traders will still have losing trades occasially, it is wise to make sure that you always trade with a stop loss in order to minimize your losses (that is rule #3).

But more than anything else, it is important to be consistent in the amount of money that you place on each trade. Do not trade 1 lot, and then later that day trade 8 lots, as this is a sure-fire indication that you are not confident in the rate of success of your trading system.

So remember, be consistent and trade the same number of lots each time!

If you've read my earlier articles, you'll know that I consistently stress on the importance of money management because good techniques and setups alone won't save you from bad money management. So it only makes sense to know what good money management is. Fair enough?

Ok, let's move on to the good stuff.

Money management with regards to trading is pretty broad and can cover several topics. I'm most concerned with trading sizes and monthly maximum drawdowns here.

Being a very conservative trader, I always tell my fellow traders and students that I trade with a true positional leverage of just 1:2. I never fail to get shocked looks from them. And I can tell that they are in disbelief because they feel you can never profit sufficiently with such leverages. Nothing can be further from the truth. It's about capital preservation ... I'm sure you've heard about it before.

This means that if I wanted to trade standard lot sizes, I need to ensure that I have at least $50,000 in available equity. Here's my secret formula ... Lot size to be traded = Total Capital / 5000

Got it?

Ok, now let's spend a bit of time talking about max drawdowns in a month. Different traders have different mental sets and levels of aggressiveness. For a long time running, I've always been using 5% as a guideline for my monthly maximum drawdown. That means if I start the month with $5000 in available balance, should I ever hit a loss of $250, I will not allow myself to take another trade until the next calendar month.

This will train your trader's muscles which can only help you in the long run. Hope this little article has helped you somewhat. As always, good trading!

A trader's money management style can be the difference between a loss and a gain. While it is often viewed as unpleasant and even as a burden, this aspect is crucial to Forex trading success over the long term.

Forex money management forces a consistent monitoring of a trader's position and to accept the losses when necessary. Most people do not care for this aspect of trading, but it is very important.

In many cases of large losses, poor money management was the culprit. Everyone wants the $1 billion profit in a single day, but that is a market rarity. Good Forex money management, though, can give a trader much better odds of a large gain than a trader who has little or no money management.

Larry Hite, a very successful day trader and trend follower, advises beginner traders to risk only 1% of their total equity on any trade. At 1%, a loss is very minimal and it is much easier to recoup and rebound.

On an individual trade, the 1% makes little difference and even if the trader is wrong 20 times, he or she will still maintain 80% in equity. This type of Forex money management, however, requires discipline which is often in short supply with many traders.

Money is easy to lose, but not so easy to make back. This attitude of the market is what wise traders must keep in mind to avoid big losses.

For example, a trader invests $100,000 and loses $50,000. This is a 50% loss. However, the percentage that that trader must make in order get back to the original $100,000 is actually 100%. This would mean that there was a 50% drawdown, the percentage of the difference between the peak and trough of an investment.

It is because of this factor that traders who are joining the Forex market for the first time should use their speculative capital (money set aside for trading purposes with a high probability of loss) only.

In deciding how much money to begin trading with, it is advisable to select an amount that can be considered as an acceptable loss. That number, divided by five, allows the trader more trade attempts - and five times to take a loss.

Another effective Forex money management strategy is to establish a high reward to risk ratio.

When there is a potential to make 3 times more than is being risked, or a 3:1 reward/risk ratio, it is a good time to trade. This is a high reward to risk ratio.

When using this strategy, the chance of a profit is much greater than lower reward to risk ratios. This also leaves much more cushion in the event of a loss.

Good Forex money management can take a trader from gambling with his or her money, hoping for a gain, but probably encountering many losses, to successfully trading while maximizing gains and minimizing losses.

It may not be as exciting as other aspects of Forex trading, but for traders who want higher gains, money management is an absolute necessity.

Many traders believe that the obvious way to make money is simply to have more winners than losers, but this is too simplistic, and what often trips up the unwary player is a lack of money management and attention to risk. Clearly, entering positions correctly and where to place stop losses are of great importance, but one area that is rarely examined because it is very complex is money management, and the reason is probably quite simple.

Certain trades or investments appeal to different people, and who is to know what their overall financial position is before giving them the correct advice on what amount to trade or invest. Furthermore, it is very easy for an investor to confuse a trade with a portfolio investment of stocks, or make a long term purchase but with one eye on a quick buck. For these reasons, money management rules must be adhered to for each trade.

A typical experience

One of the experiences many of the great traders have in common is that they blew a fortune early on, simply because they had no conception of money management. A typical story was that they had traded well, running a sum of say $10,000 up to $15,000 in six months, and they began to think that because they had a good trading system, they would have done better by leveraging up for super fast profits. In some cases they simply doubled up trading positions, but ran into a string of losses. As they did not reduce trading size accordingly, the account equity was wiped out and they ended up actually owing money within days – it was that quick.

For sure, they probably were not limiting risk with stop losses, but in some cases the share or commodity gapped up or down, and just one big trading position was all it took to blow away months of hard work.

Extreme events and the problems they can cause

One of the more remarkable aspects of trading is the frequency of extreme events, but these are simply statistical anomalies which occur with random regularity (forgive the lapse into chaos theory, but it’s important). There have been instances of a doubling of a share price overnight – this occurred with Psion twice in 1999. At the other extreme, there was a fall of 70% in a day with Marconi on the 21st March 2002, where they opened at 92.5p (adjusted for share consolidation), and the next day hit 27.5p. At the time, these were both FTSE 350 stocks at the time, and not small companies.

How to reduce the risk of wipeout

These might be extreme examples, but the bottom line is that events often happen when you least expect them. You must treat your trading account as distinct from all other investments, and once you’ve done this, there are three things you can do:

1. Accept that occasionally there will be an extreme event, so if the worst that can normally happen is a 30% fall on a profit warning, or an equivalent rise on a bid overnight, work out how much that would impact your equity.
2. Don’t feel that by buying five blue chips of equal amounts, you’ve diversified your risk - if they are highly correlated i.e. high beta stocks, or they are all tech stocks, then it is virtually the same risk as buying five times the amount in one stock.
3. If your equity is falling, and statistically you can expect a run of eight or more losses in a row more than once within a typical trading lifetime, keep reducing your size until you start winning again.

How much should you risk on each trade?

From experience, if you aim to lose an absolute maximum of 5% of your account equity on one trade, and combine a wide range of trades in different asset classes with long and short positions, then you should have at least 20 consecutive attempts before it’s time to give up.

So if you have to set a stop loss on a volatile share which is wider than normal, then simply reduce the trade size for that share so that your maximum loss is no higher than usual. Furthermore, if you do run into a string of losers, if you keep reducing position size, then your losses will slow down.

Finally, all trades should be treated in the same way, and if you don’t feel that a potential trade looks as good as others in your list, then don’t do it. The converse is that you must take every trade that fits your entry criteria, whether or not you have won or lost recently. The whole point is that a good disciplined system will only work when all trades are taken with equal amounts using realistic targets, stops and money management.

Money management is a bit like sex, we all do it but we don’t talk about it much yet, if you don’t employ proper money management you won’t win. Let’s look at some basics to do with money management.

Money management is the difference between making stellar gains or wiping your account out. Here are some important points to keep in mind when adding it to your forex trading strategy.

Risk & Reward

Risk goes with reward this is common knowledge yet, many traders try to restrict risk so much they actually create it and ensure they lose.

For example day traders think their taking small risks as their stops are close but their 100% guaranteed to lose over time because all short term volatility is random.

The risk looks small but the odds are stacked against them.

Another example of trying to restrict risk to much is trailing a stop to close and getting stopped out by normal volatility and sees the trader get stopped out to soon.

These traders need to make a study of standard deviation of price part of their forex education.

Betting to Win

Just like the successful card player you need to load up your bets on high odd hands and fold losers quickly. When you have a high odds trade denoted by your forex trading system up your bet size.

You here many traders bang on about risking 2% per trade but this is ridiculous for most traders.

For example on $10,000 account that’s $200! How close would your stop have to be?

To close and guarantee your stopped out by volatility.

If you want to win bet 10 – 20% on your high odds trades.

Stop placement

In forex trading most traders like to trade with stops behind support and resistance and you will notice on many occasions how many times a price spikes through the stop in the day and then closes below it.

If you can always use a “stop close” this will prevent from daily volatility hitting your stop in the day session or if you cant keep an eye on the market use “at or in the money options”

Trailing a stop

If you are long term trend following you need to give the market plenty of room to breathe and keep your stop back. Don’t jack it up after a day or so like most traders do - leave it alone. When you have good profits move it behind key support say at 40 day moving average penetrated on a close basis which works well.

If you want to follow long term trends, you are going to have to accept that you will give a lot back at the turning point - but if you get 60% of the major trends you will do well.

Targets

I find stop trailing hard and like to work with a target and get out when its hit.

If the move carries on so what? I am happy, as I got what I want.

In shorter term swing trading, targets are essential as these smaller profits can disappear quickly.

Finally Remember This:

How you deal with risk, will be the difference between you losing or winning at forex trading. Try and restrict risk to much and you will guarantee you lose, but take meaningful risks at the RIGHT time, with courage and conviction and you could enjoy fantastic currency trading success.

Remember the old gamblers saying:

“There’s a time to hold them, a time to fold them and a time to get out of town fast”

Its very applicable to forex trading and money management!

Teaching your kids about money management helps them develop lifelong money smarts. But, it's difficult to teach your kids about budgeting when you're having money problems yourself.

Your first step in making your children money savvy is to give them a good role model. Teach yourself about personal finance and then demonstrate your good spending habits to your children so they will learn the same habits.

Most children haven't been taught the basics of money management, so it's not surprising that over 120,000 young adults under the age of 25 filed for bankruptcy in 2003. If kids don't learn solid money skills at home or school, they are on the path of having financial problems throughout their adult life.

How can you help your kids avoid this dismal statistic?

1. Talk about money in your home; don't make it a taboo subject. Discuss any money problems openly and how you can overcome them.

2. Give your kids regular allowances. If they're going to learn how to manage money, they will need to have some. You can give them money as an "allowance" or as payment for household chores. The amount you give your child will depend on his age and maturity level.

3. Teach your child basic skills by using his "income" as an example. Have him list expenses over a month, such as school supplies, clothing, school lunches and treats. It doesn't have to be exact, just a reasonable estimate. Once you have the list, show him the difference between necessary and unnecessary expenses. Finally, help him decide on the best ways to spend – and save – his income.

At what age do you start teaching kids about money? Early. Pre-schoolers can learn about the different coins and, for instance, how many nickels equal a dime, etc.

Play "store" with children aged 5-8 to teach them how to make change. Use real money to buy items you have marked with prices. Also teach them that you don't just take money out of the ATM machine but that you must deposit money into it as well. This is the age to take your child to the bank to open her first savings account.

9-12 year olds can learn different ways to save money, from "shopping" for lower priced items to using coupons to lower the cost. When you see advertisements on television, discuss how the ad tries to influence them in what they buy.

Teenagers between 13-16 can be put in charge of buying the family groceries – with supervision, of course! Give your teen the list of items to buy, an amount of money to spend and have her look for coupons and ads in order to get the best prices.

Youngsters over 17 can get jobs after school and weekends. This will teach them that money must be earned…that they won't automatically "get" money when they're out on their own.

When your teen is ready for a car, help him research the costs of automobile ownership: the cost of the car itself, gas, maintenance and insurance. Then, help him find ways to save for those expenses.

Teaching children about money management throughout their childhood will give them the confidence they need to manage their personal finances when they reach adulthood.

You will certainly find that it is really not easy to evaluate a money manager. Some money managers cannot really help. As a matter of fact they should be able to help you to increase your net worth.

When you consider hiring a money manager, you should bear the following issues in mind.

First of all, you will need to consider how they make money grow. What are the tools they will use to help you to increase the net worth? Do they invest on stocks or mutual funds? What is the focus of their investment portfolio? You will need to ask all these questions.

Then you will try to see if they perform well. Of course there is no way to see if they will perform well in the future. What you are doing is to investigate their performance in the past. It will be excellent if you can have the performance record for a whole market cycle. The market goes up and down in a market cycle. You can know how well the money manager performed in the past thoroughly if you can see how well they did when the market went up or down.

It is also important to know how they will make decision on their portfolios. Do they do the research themselves? Or will they rely on research results from some other sources? To what extent will they rely on the these sources? You will certainly have a better understanding on them if you can ask these questions.

The people who are actually working are also very important. If possible, you need to ask who will actually help you to manage the portfolio. Is he or she an experienced one in the business? You may also want to know who is going to help when the one responsible for your portfolio is on vacation.

Of course you may also consider the cost when you are choosing a money manager. However, this may not be the most important criteria you need to consider. A manager which charges you a high fee does not necessary mean that they will perform very well.

You should always ask for a quote first. You will need to know how a money manager charges. You will try to understand what kind of fees or commissions will be involved. Be prepared to negotiate if you are not comfortable with the quote. It is your money after all!
